Known as the “Prince of Preachers,” this Victorian, Calvinistic, Baptist minister testified as a powerful gospel witness in his time, but his influence endures today. Born on June 19th, 1834, in Kelvedon, Essex, the firstborn of seventeen children, he loved books, particularly John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress. Salvation came January 6th, 1850 when hiding in a church service from a roaring blizzard he heard the sermon that awakened his heart. After eleven years preaching in various churches, he opened the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London. His ministry exploded resulting in the founding of 66 parachurch ministries. His remarkable ministry in London would last 38 years before his death on January 31st, 1892 in Menton, France.

Waiting on the Lord

These Bible verses remind us that God’s timing is perfect and that we will be rewarded when we wait on the Lord.

to establish the land,
to apportion the desolate heritages,” — Isaiah 49:8

Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.” — James 5:7-8

For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.” — Romans 8:22-25
